A STRIKE by council workers to protest at proposed changes to their pension scheme will go ahead on Tuesday.
The Government is planning to alter local government pension entitlements, and the unions are concerned this could mean a deterioration in pensions and a much tougher deal for workers.West Wiltshire District Council and Wiltshire County Council are putting into place contingency plans to minimise the impact on essential services.
About a third of the district council's workforce has union membership, so there will be disruption in some services. Exact numbers of strikers will not be known until the day, but priority will be given to departments where the customer needs immediate help such as housing.
The county council does not know how many of its staff will be taking industrial action, but its contingency plans include providing cover for departments that people need a response from immediately, such as social services. Cllr Sarah Content, leader of the district council said: "I would ask people to bear with us on March 28. "We will endeavour to keep any disruption to a minimum."
