A COCAINE addict who was caught with more than £33,000 worth of drugs has escaped being sent to prison.
Matthew Mather, 20, of Mount Pleasant, Atworth, had 52 nine-ounce bars of cannabis resin in the boot of his car when police stopped him, close to his home, near Melksham on January 26, for having a defective light.
But Recorder Steven Lennard, sitting at Swindon crown court, decided he did not need to jail Mather, who cried in the dock throughout the hearing.
He also decided not to confiscate Mather's car, which was being used to courier drugs for a dealer.
Instead he was given a nine-month suspended sentance of 18 months. During this time he must complete 150 hours of community service, attend the think first programme and observe an 8pm to 6am curfew for two months.
