I WAS horrified to see in your paper First Great Western's proposed revised train timetable from December 2006.
That they intend to axe the last two trains from Bath each evening is quite iniquitous, affecting as it does not only the passengers from Warminster, but from Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge as well.
This will make it impossible for anyone without a car to enjoy any kind of evening entertainment outside their own town, since the last train will run at 21.35. What film, theatre, or any other event finishes by that time? What if one wants to dine in Bath with friends?
In this part of the world many passengers are pensioners, either not wishing or being able to afford to drive a car, but still wanting to enjoy the latest film, play, concert or festival event. It's bad enough that First Great Western proposes to take away from us the direct route to Waterloo, but this latest plan is even worse.
First Great Western seems to have condemned us all to evenings by the fireside in our carpet slippers. Train travel is reputed to be getting better, but not for local communities such as ours.
