Concerns over the state of soldiers’ married quarters in Warminster has prompted west Wilts MP Dr Andrew Murrison to criticise the Army for not looking after families left back at home.

Dr Murrison has vowed to investigate what can be done to improve the living conditions in houses off Imber Road, after receiving two complaints from families living in Pepper Place about problems with damp and mould.

He said: “This month we have lost two people from Warminster from the 3rd Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment.

“It’s just not on if people are going to be deployed leaving their loved ones in less than satisfactory accommodation.

“The flats were fairly bad when I visited them 10 years ago and it seems that not a lot has improved since then.

“There are young children living in those flats and it is just unsatisfactory.” Dr Murrison has written to the Ministry of Defence expressing his concerns and is awaiting a response.

Monica Geoghegan, manager of the Wiltshire branch of the Royal British Legion, said she fully supports the MP’s campaign.

She said: “I am aware that the married quarters are not up to standard in Warminster. I would support Andrew Murrison’s campaign in trying to get the Warminster Garrison accommodation improved.

“I know there is damp in a lot of the married quarters. For the family to have to deal with that on their own is difficult.”

Army Family Federation spokesman Sue Davies said: “Defence Estates and Modern Housing Solutions are working together to try and eradicate the problems.

“There are some houses that are not up to scratch but strong inroads have been made in other housing areas. Unfortunately it always comes down to money.

“It is dreadful when you find yourself in a situation where you have damp, especially if you have got young children.”

A spokesman for MoD Defence Estates said: “Properties at Pepper Place, Warminster, are in generally good condition. A full and comprehensive repair and maintenance service is provided to all occupants.

“The contractor has received very few complaints about condensation or damp issues. Any reports received are fully investigated and action taken.

“Defence Estates works closely with the Armed Forces to identify properties to prioritise for upgrading or improvement. 220 Service homes in the area have benefited from improvements in the last two years.”
