Staverton School held their first Urban Day, arranged by Active Trowbridge of Trowbridge Town Council.
Thirty pupils participated in a fun-packed day of skateboarding which was coached by Pro Skater Paul Carter from Bristol, with DJ workshops run by Josy, who has his own urban radio station and hip hop dance classes taught by Stacey Oliver.
Paul Carter introduced the children to skateboarding, teaching them the basic skills and knowledge, while also showing them achievable tricks.
Josy taught participants how to mix music which led to them playing and mixing their own records.
Both coaches gave the youngsters stickers, signed records and signed photos.
Paul Carter said: “Seeing these children trying a new sport is awesome and I think we have some great talent which they can continue to use at Trowbridge Skateboard Park. I wish I had opportunities like this at primary school when I was younger!”
Hayley Bell, Trowbridge Town Council’s Leisure Activities Development Officer, said: “The Urban Day gave children the opportunity to try something completely new and the excitement on their faces was infectious.
“We would also like to thank the headmaster of Staverton School, Bruce Douglas, for allowing such a different project to go ahead within his school.”
The Town Council has been so successful with their Community Sports coaches that new projects within Trowbridge schools and the local area are now able to reach more children. For more information on planned alternative activity days, call Hayley Bell on 01225 765072.
