An Olympic silver medal winning sailor has helped to mark the completion of a permanent orienteering course at Brokerswood Country Park, which has been designed and built by Trowbridge pupils.

Joe Glanfield, who won silver at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008, joined Year 7 and 8 pupils from the John of Gaunt School, who have been involved in a six-week project to create the course, and later took part in an assembly.

The project is part of the Living for Sport campaign, run by Sky Sports, and the pupils have been working with Sarum Orienteering Club and the British Orienteering Federation.

Joe, whose visit was organised by the Youth Sport Trust, said: “This kind of project is so important for kids. It gets them actively learning and is the kind of thing that makes them enjoy school.”

Now complete, the course will be made available to local schools, youth groups and orienteering clubs.
