A double container lorry from Airsprung has ended up wedged on top of a garden wall after an accident at the crossroads near the Leigh Park Hotel in Bradford on Avon.
The lorry is spilling out diesel on to the road after the incident happened at around 3.30pm on the B3105.
A green Vauxhall Vectra estate was also involved in the accident. The woman driver, believed to have been in her 30s and from Wootton Bassett, has been taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.
Onlooker Stephen Aycliffe said: "The crash must have happened minutes before I passed the scene as the police and fire service were just arriving on the scene as I left.
"I have seen some pretty bad accidents in the past but this looks huge."
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area as police clear the scene.
The road is expected to be closed for several hours as police are waiting for heavy lifting gear to drag the stricken lorry away from its precarious position.
The wall the lorry is wedged on belongs to the Elbury House bed and breakfast.
Firefighters from Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge are using steel poles propped under the lorry to stop it from toppling over.
They are also using steel wires attached to one of the three fire engines at the scene to make it more stable.
Firefighters are on standby at the scene with officers to ensure the 400 litres of disel that are leaking from the lorry do not ignite when it is moved.
Trowbridge fire watch manager Damien Bence said: "When we arrived at the scene we checked that the female driver was ok and once we realised nobody was injured we got to work securing the lorry with stabilisation equipment from the wemergency support unit in Trowbridge.
"An appliance from Bradford on Avon is also in attendance and we have foam ready for when the vehicle is removed from the wall just in case itignites, which is very unlikely."
