Thousands of people turned out in the sunshine to take part in the west country-themed Box Revels on Monday with The Wurzels.

On the Revels’ 25th anniversary, people were singing and dancing along to old favourites from The Wurzels including I am a Cider Drinker and Combine Harvester, on Box Recreation Ground.

Organiser Catherine Knights, of The Bassetts, said: “The weekend of celebrations was a huge success, with about 2,500 visitors raising thousands of pounds for community groups in the village.

“Everybody seemed to be having a really good time with rides for the children and a variety of stalls for the adults and loads of refreshments.”

She said the novelty dog show was a great hit and a favourite category that went down well with youngsters was the best young handler award.

Mrs Knights, said: “The show was a success with many people including children taking part.

“Our black labrador picked up two prizes, second place for dog that is most like their owner and third prize in the veteran category.”

All the money raised from the event will be ploughed into community groups such as the Green Room and Box Cubs, and any other organisations that come forward and express an interest in funds.

Among the stalls, an unusual hit was a ‘green’ horse called Lulu at the Green Party stall – its hair had been dyed green to promote environmental awareness and visitors were given free low energy light bulbs.

The West Country banquet on Saturday evening was also a great event with a silent auction raising £1,500 and people were getting into the spirit of things dressing as Aunt Sally and scarecrows, including Worzel Gummidge.

Mrs Knights said: “We hope that next year will be as good as it has been this weekend.”
