Pupils at Westbury Infants School have been pulling up their socks and tying up their boots in memory of a former student who died of leukaemia.

Oliver Ladd, from Hawkeridge near Westbury, was born with Down's Syndrome and at the age of three-and-a-half was diagnosed with leukaemia.

He lost his battle with cancer in January last year and since then the school, his family and friends have been raising money for the organisations that helped Oliver and his family.

Last year, the Eden Vale Road school raised more than £2,500 for CLIC Sargent during their inaugural football funday, and are hoping to do the same again this year.

Kelly Bradley, 21, teaching assistant at the school, said: “I was in goal for the Year 2 penalty shoot-out and I think some of them were taking it a bit seriously - for little ones they were really hitting it hard.

“We haven’t got a target amount, the main thing is for the children to enjoy themselves and to collect as much money as possible.

“Some of the money from last year’s event paid for Oliver’s Orchard, which looks really lovely now.”

Miss Bradley has already run the Longleat 10k, Bristol 10k and Bath Half Marathon raising more than £1,500 for CLIC Sargent in the process.

She plans to run the Bristol Half Marathon in September and the Longleat 10k again in October.
