Former Harris Bacon Factory forewoman Gillian Webster has died, aged 76, after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs Webster, of Bath Road, Chippenham, worked at the bacon factory for almost 25 years.

She moved from Calne to Chippenham when she married to her childhood sweetheart Bill and the couple went onto have two sons, Peter, 51, and Thomas, 49.

Her eldest son said: “Mum was very popular at the factory and we used to live off the meat she brought home.

“I always remember her saying how much fun her and others had in the factory. It used to sound like a real laugh.

“She was popular in both Chippenham and Calne and was a great woman.”

Mrs Webster, who has five grandchildren, was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago and thought she had beaten the disease after being in remission for five years.

Unfortunately she was diagnosed again in 2007 and doctors told her it had spread too far to be operated on successfully.

She died at home on May 1 and was buried in Betws-y-coed, North Wales, where her family came from.

Her family has asked that any donations in her memory be made to Cancer Research UK.
