Wiltshire MPs have welcomed the resgination of Commons Speaker Michael Martin in the wake of the MPs expenses scandal.

Westbury MP Andrew Murrison said: "I hope we elect a person of standing, regardless of political party, who will lead the work that needs to be done quickly to restore public confidence in Parliament."

Devizes MP Michael Ancram, who said he had known Mr Martin for 20 years and liked him as a person, said it was the right decision.

"He realised he had lost the respect of the House," said Mr Ancram.

North Wiltshire MP James Gray said he just wanted to draw a line under a terrible week in politics and was glad Mr Martin had chosen to resign.
