A major blaze which ripped through a bed factory in Westbury on Thursday was a caused by sparks from an angle grinder.

The fire broke out at bed manufacturing firm Sleepcraft on the Brook Lane Industrial Estate at about 3pm on Thursday.

Three people, two men and a woman, who were in the factory at the time managed to evacuate before the fire took hold.

At the peak of the operation, there were 35 firefighters involved, with five fire appliances, two water carriers, an aerial unit from Salisbury and an incident control unit from Devizes.

Wiltshire Fire Investigation team have confirmed that the fire was caused by sparks from an angle grinder, which was being used to cut up apart a spray booth.

Spokesperson for Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, Louise Knox, said: “Because it's such a big open plan building the fire was able to grow quickly. Also the building has a mezzanine floor and there was lots of plastic and wood inside.

“Lots of people are quoted as hearing an explosion, but that seem to have been a result of the fire and not the cause.”

Firefighters remained at the scene of a blaze until Friday afternoon.
