A Warminster man has appeared before magistrates charged with the theft of animals, including three ducks from a community farm for disadvantaged children.
Richard Andrew, 22, of The Dene, Warminster, pleaded guilty to stealing a new-born lamb from Farnicombe Farm in Upton Scudamore on March 28, which was dumped on the doorstep of a house in Pound Street, Warminster, 12 days later.
He also admitted taking three ducks from Larkrise Community Farm, in West Ashton Road, Trowbridge, on April 6, which left youngsters at the farm devastated.
The ducks, which were on special medication, were later found at Andrew’s home and were returned to the community farm, but the lamb sadly died.
He was also charged with theft of an Aprilia motorbike in Shrewton between March 24 and 25 and a Honda 70 motorbike in Warminster on April 1.
Keith Ballinger, prosecuting, told the court: “The ducks had a great deal of sentimental value to everyone at the farm and were recovered from the defendant’s garden.
“In interview he said he wanted some ducks and decided to steal them but he didn’t realise it was a community farm. He said he felt bad about committing the offence.”
Andrew Eddy, defending, told the court: “The reason the offence is more serious than it appears at first sight is the fact the ducks were taken from this particular establishment but he had no idea at all that the ducks were of sentimental value.
“When he was charged he said he was sorry because of the hurt caused to the disadvantaged children that the ducks belonged to.
“He wanted some ducks but didn’t know where to legitimately get them from and thought this was a rescue centre for ducks.”
Magistrate Lady Gooch said: “We’re not going to sentence you today. I want the probation service to look at all the options for us, including the possibility of a custodial sentence.
“We are very concerned that you took these animals and vehicles. This sort of behaviour is quite unacceptable and pushes up the seriousness of your offending.”
Andrew was released on conditional bail and will reappear at Chippenham Magistrates’ Court on June 1
