The Wiltshire Times & Chippenham News sponsored Team of the Week award for May 10, 2009 has been awarded to Premier Division side Corsham Centre A.
For a third successive week the choice of Team of the Week Award winners was a very close call and like the previous two weekends came down to a battle between two sides for the honour, the two teams in contention this week were second division The Crown Devizes and premier division Corsham Centre A and it was the latter who just claimed the award for their 5-2 victory over Biddestone Social that just saw them edge out The Crown whose 2-1 win over FC Bradford wasn’t that fair behind. Mark Roberts, Crown Devizes side saved their best until last as their 2-1 home success over an FC Bradford side had threatened to derail their guests chances of finishing the season as Division two runners-up.
The hosts who only four days earlier had been beaten 10-0 by the Pheasant had been expected to lose to Bradford who had beaten them 9-0 when the sides met earlier in the season and were bidding to extend their unbeaten run to 13 matches, but it wasn’t to be as home stunned their guests by claiming a 2-1 success.
Leigh Wells gave the Crown a first half lead which was doubled by Mark Adams in the second period, Bradford pulled a goal back on 70 minutes and although they searched for an equaliser The Crown defended really well as they hung on to claim their surprise but well deserved win. Corsham Centre A and Biddestone Social went into their top of the table battle at Meriton Avenue neck and neck with only one goal separating the sides but come the final whistle of a thoroughly entertaining contest that was a credit to both teams and the league it was three time defending Robson Taylor, Chippenham League Premier division, champions Corsham Centre who emerged 5-2 victors that put them on course to complete a league and knockout cup double. Simon Gray gave the Centre the lead on seven minutes but a battling Biddestone side were on level term on 32 minutes, Centre regained the lead two minutes later through, but their joy was short lived as Biddestone hit back to tie the scores at two each but the Centre regained the initiative in the 42 minute through Dan King who continued his good run of form in front of goal when he gave this team a 3-2 interval lead.
The second period saw the Centre play some of their best football of the season and just two minutes after the restart Simon Gray produced what was to be the killer blow as he bagged his second of the game to give Martin Bradfield’s team a 4-2 lead and when James Lye fired home number five in the 55th minute it was advantage the Centre in the race for the title.
