The next stage of improvements to Westbury town centre will see Maristow Street get a new look.
The first phase of the Vision for Westbury project was a £370, 000 revamp of the town’s Market Place, carried out between October and February. The refurbishment aimed to link the square more effectively with the rest of the town centre.
The next stage of the project will make improvements to Maristow Street with funding coming from Wiltshire Council and Westbury Town Council through the Five Towns Initiative scheme, which was set up to regenerate Melksham, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Warminster and Westbury.
The scheme will be led by Helen Powdrill, Wiltshire Council’s principal highways engineer, who led the recent Market Place regeneration.
She said: “As part of the Vision for Westbury, we would like to improve Maristow Street for shoppers, residents and businesses alike.
“We are about to embark on a comprehensive consultation process to ensure that what we do has been designed with the help of local people and businesses. The consultation will give everyone a chance to have their say at an early stage.”
The consultation will begin next month but the council do not expect any work to be started until at least April 2010.
Westbury mayor Mike Hawkins said: “We are very pleased to get this and we look forward to seeing what ideas come out.
“What we hope to achieve is a much improved Westbury for the people that live here, the businesses here and for visitors to the town.
“The town has a lot to offer and anything that draws attention to that has got to be a good thing.”
