There was a French feel to Westbury at the weekend with the first public event held at the town’s Market Place since a £370,000 revamp..
A French themed market was supplied by Normandy based travelling market Marché de France on Saturday.
The market offered a wide range of French food stuffs, produce and products, along with clothing, household goods, and gifts.
Westbury mayor Cllr Mike Hawkins said: “Everybody I spoke to said how much they enjoyed the event and what a great community atmosphere there was so I hope it’s the first of many.
“The market stall holders said the new layout was absolutely fantastic. It was marvellous to see the Market Place being put to its proper use.
“I bought a nice piece of duck pie from one of the stalls and it was absolutely gorgeous.”
All Saints Church in Church Lane opened its tower to the public during the event, but the mayor admitted he didn’t venture up the 14th century structure. He said: “I prefer to keep my feet firmly on the ground.”
All Saints team rector Jonathan Burke was pleased with the public’s interest.
He said: “It was a very popular event and lots of people took their cameras up the tower to take pictures of the view.
“We will be opening up the tower again at the church’s fete on Saturday, June 6, so we hope people will come along again and help support their local church.”
The Market Place revamp, completed in February, included moving car parking spaces away from the centre, planting trees, installing new street furniture, and creating space for a civic monument.
