Dogs from across the county descended on Wiltshire College Lackham yesterday for the Grrrufts Kennel Club Companion Dog Show.
Students from the college organised the event as part of National Pet Month and to celebrate rescued animals.
With a variety of classes for dogs to be entered in, the main field was full of wagging tails and the sound of barking dogs all enjoying the day out, despite the overcast conditions.
Sisters Liz and Jess Hunt, of Lacock, brought along their Irish Wolfhound, Keeva.
Liz said: “She is a very thin dog, she is unbelievably dumb.
“She’ll bark at things for ages without even knowing what she’s barking at.
“She’s also a big scaredy cat, despite being so big.
“I keep telling her she is supposed to be bold and courageous, but she gets scared of little puppies and starts to panic.
“She is very sweet and is great with children who like to ride her and end up falling off, but she is daft as a brush.”
She added: “At home she gets to go where she likes.
“She has her own armchair but likes the sofa and usually takes up most of it.
“You have to really try and squeeze in if she’s on it already.
“We have entered into three competitions including the open pedigree class and we’re going to win them all.”
Jess said: “We got her in February last year, she comes from an Irish family and has a brother in Corsham.
“My mum has always wanted one and when she saw the advert on a notice board she decided she’d get her.”
Sophie and Rebecca Williets from Trowbridge were attending a dog show for the first time with their dog Jaz.
Rebecca, 13, who goes to Clarendon School in Trowbridge, said she was entering Jaz into three competitions.
She said: “We’re part of the Chippenham Dog Agility Club so we’re entering Jaz into the agility class.
“She’s also entered for Prettiest Bitch and the Most Appealing Eyes competition.
“We got him from Hilperton when she was eight months old and have had her for three years.
“She’s a really friendly dog, and likes people.”
Corey and Haken Blackmore were entering their three-year-old Cavalier King Charles.
Corey, 12, who goes to George Ward School in Melksham, had recently got the dog show bug after being taken to one in Melksham park by his parents.
He said: “We got Billy just over a year ago.
“He is a really energetic dog, he likes to sniff everything and is really good with children and he likes other dogs.
“He is being entered in the Junior Handler competition, the Non Sporting Pedigree class and the Most Appealing Eyes competition.”
In with a bark of winning the most handsome male award was Jack Russell Eddy wearing a dashing red handkerchief.
Owners Emma Cuss and Jason Hartford, of Trowbridge, said their dog was clearly enjoying the day out.
Emma said: “He loves the attention and having so many other dogs around.
“He’s really excited and is trying to kiss everybody.
“He’s very charismatic and full of energy and most of the time he wears me out.
“We bought him as a puppy about a year ago after seeing an advert in the local free ads paper.
“He is called Eddy after the Jack Russell in the sitcom Frasier who’s got the same name.
“We’ve entered him into the Best Trick, Most Handsome Male and Best Eyes competitions.”
As well as the doggy based activities, there was plenty of other activities going on including stalls, a bouncy castle and a pets corner with rabbits and a donkey.
