PREMIER DIVISON: Biddestone Social and Corsham Centre A are locked together at the top of the Robson Taylor, Chippenham League, Premier division on 35 points apiece but the Social were given a massive boost to their chances of denying the Centre a fourth successive top flight title as they defeated the Ship FC 18-1 to claim a one goal better goal difference that their fierce rivals who they meet this coming Sunday.
With the Ship trailing 4-1 at the interval their was no sign that a second half onslaught was on the cards but once Biddestone had added a few more goals to their first half quartet, the Ship seemed to lose interest which led to Biddy scoring at will, Jamie Lyons who failed to hit the target in the first 45 minutes scored 11 in the second 45 the fourth of which was a brilliant strike when he connected first time with a Dan Lardner cross to lob the Ship keeper from 18 yards out.
Lardner himself score two as did both Danny Baker and Gary Banks whose second was an 18 yard screamer, Danny Jones single made up the winners 18 who must now be favourites to deny the Centre the title as they seem to have got their season back on track and will fancy their chances of defeating the Ship and Westbury Rangers A again after they have locked horns with the Centre.
The Ship’s consolation came from Lee Hayward who fired home from a tight angle in his final game for the club before moving away from the area. FC Colerne 0, Corsham Centre A 5 FC Colerne suffered a second defeat in eight days at the hands of Corsham Centre A who followed up their 7-0 win of a week ago with a 5-0 success that keeps them in the hunt to complete a league and cup double on track as they bid to follow up their knockout cup victory over the Pheasant with another league title.
The Centre opened the scoring on 20 minutes through James Lye, Shane Godsell added number two after a good run and cross from Liam Ralph, on 45 minutes a pinpoint cross from Simon Gray set up James Lye for number three.
James Lye scored his third and the Centre’s fourth on 60 minutes and Darrin Moss netted number five. The Centre’s victory was marred by late on when Simon Gray was taken out and the injury is likely to see him miss the rest of the season which will be a huge blow to their chances of winning the title especially as they will be without midfield general Graig Gingell for a number of big games.
Maud Heath Sports 1, Box Rovers 1 Maud Heath Sports and Box Rovers fought out a 1-1 draw at the Recreation Ground in Calne which both teams will be more than happy with as they look to see out a season that have seen many ups and downs for both teams.
After a goalless first half Tom Smith who scored the only goal in Rovers 1-0 win over Maud Heath a few weeks ago put the villagers ahead and with time running out it looked as if Smith’s goal would divide the sides again but a goalkeeping error from stand-in keeper Justin Flower gifted Maud Heath their equaliser which was scored by Clive Slade who pounced with just five minutes remaining after Flower had let the ball bounce and go past him which allowed Slade the easiest of chances to tie the scoreline. Semington Rovers 1, Potterne FC 1 Semington Rovers probably had the better of the game with Potterne but come the final whistle of their last game of the season were more than happy to settle for a share of the spoils from their 1-1 draw as they had drawn their team line from a hat prior to kick off and it was their regular goalkeeper Tom Wysocki who proved to be their hero in front of goal when he hit a sublime strike to put them ahead.
Wysocki had never scored before the game and if he never scores again he will always remember his goal against Potterne, from a corner the ball fell over the head of Wysocki who with his back to goal turned and drilled a brilliant volley home from 12 yards to the joy of all his team mates.
Semington went close to adding to their lead but they were denied by the woodwork, when the ball hit the bar and then both posts before going to safety, Potterne’s equaliser came in the second half and was scored by Jamie Bayes. Westbury Rangers A 1, Winsley 5 Winsley turned on the style to defeat Westbury Rangers A 5-1 at Meadow Lane and the villagers will be hoping that they can start next season with team that finished this one, as since the start of January Paul Ranger’s teams have only suffered three defeats in 14 games and to finish their campaign with a win over Westbury was a great achievement as they lost the reverse fixture 13-3.
Phil Little’s opener for Winsley was cancelled out by Andrew Backman who headed past his own keeper Chris Birleson while under pressure from Mark Young and with the score at one apiece at the break the opening goal in the second period was always going to be important and it was Winsley’s Mike Little who got it when he put his team ahead.
Mike Little’s second of the game gave the visitors a two-goal cushion, Paul Ranger’s 20 yarder made the points safe before Andy Bloodworth hit the goal of the game from 40 yards out to seal a fine victory for Winsley who up to Christmas looked as if they would be struggling to stay in the division, but managed to turn things around in grand style. Midweek Round-up (Wednesday Night) Corsham Centre A’s 5-0 victory over Semington Rovers in midweek was good enough to give the three time defending champions a share of the number one spot with Biddestone Social who are on 33 points with the Centre but have an inferior goal difference.
The Centre took the lead through James Lye and had doubled their advantage by the interval when Simon Gray netted. Semington wasted a good chance to get back in the contest shortly after the re-start with Andy Harrison being the guilty party.
Further goals from Stuart Tutty, Darrin Moss for who it was his first goal for the club and Dan King sealed what was an important victory for the Centre who have six games still to play.
Midweek Round-up (Thursday Night) Dog & Fox Ashley made it four wins on the bounce and left Box Rovers with no win in four when they got the better of Stuart Beeho’s side at St Laurence School on Thursday night with what seems a convincing 6-1 winning scoreline, but for long periods of the game Rovers played the better football but were unable to come up with the end product.
Steve Roddy scored after five minutes for the Dog from an assist from Dan Folwer, the Fowler and Roddy combination made it 2-0 on 20 minutes and the two players linked up again for goal number three with Roddy again hit the target to complete his hat trick. Mike Bowler scored the goal of the game on 37 minutes but his excellent finish was to be Rovers on consolation on the night.
Roddy capped an excellent first 45 minutes as he restored the Dog’s three-goal lead on the stroke of half time and once again it was Fowler who played a major part in him scoring. The second half saw Roddy turn provider as he set up substitute Matthew Lay to make it 5-1 and then with second left Fowler got his rewards for an excellent game as he bagged the Dog’s sixth goal of the game.
Biddestone Social p The Ship FC p Biddestone Social were scheduled to play The Ship FC on Thursday just a few days before the clubs met again on Sunday, but a shortage of players led the Trowbridge based side to cancel and with time running out they face the job of getting the game played sometime next week. Westbury Rangers A 4, Potterne FC 1 Having suffered a 3-0 loss away to Potterne on the opening day of the season, Westbury Rangers A defied the pundits as they avenged that defeat with a 4-1 victory to remain in the hunt for a top three finish.
After a fruitless first 45 minutes it was Potterne who opened the scoring through Ben House on 63 minutes, Nathan Hallett brought Rangers level in the 73rd minute and four minutes later Mark Young drove home to give Rangers a 2-1 lead.
Rangers opened up a two goal lead on 83 minutes when Adrian Chantry scored after good work from Hallett and with the referee about to blow for 90 minutes Pete Ayton’s clearance found Marc Lanfear who ran through and netted to give Rangers their 4-1 success.
