A 27-year-old man from Calne has died after he lost control of his car and smashed into a telegraph pole and a tree near Studley crossroads yesterday afternoon.
Police believe the accident happened when the victim, who was driving a Peugeot 306, veered onto the other side of the road while overtaking another car on the A4, between the crossroads and The Soho Inn, at about 5.15pm.
The Peugeot, which was travelling from Chippenham towards Calne, mounted a verge and hit the pole and a tree.
PC Tony Curtis, of the Central Roads Policing Unit at Chippenham, is appealing for witnesses to the crash to call him on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The identity of the driver will be released when a formal identification has taken place.
