A look back at the way one village changed in 1970 to accommodate the increase in motor traffic this week, with some pictures from a collection held by Times reader Keith Warburton, of Bratton.
His father John Warburton, who died in 1994, aged 82, began his working life as an insurance salesman.
He served with the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry from 1935 and later with the Eighth Army.
He saw action in Eygpt, Palestine and Alexandria before being posted to Holland and Belgium during the conflict’s closing stages.
He moved his family from Trowbridge to Westbury and spent the rest of his working life as a draughtsman with Wiltshire County Council.
For many years he worked for the highways department in Trowbridge, working on road and bridge designs.
During his time with the highways section he worked on many projects to improve and upgrade the county’s roads, among them this one at Chapel Knapp, Gastard.
He was later transferred to the ambulance division and spent his last few working years at the ambulance headquarters in Chippenham.
l Can anyone help reader Christopher Sharp, who is trying to trace a former Wiltshire resident, Ruth Armstrong, who featured in a recent TV programme about the last voices of World War I.
Born in 1906, she was recalling her childhood memories of the conflict and its effect on civilians. If anyone can help Mr Sharp, he can be contacted at mardenroad@hotmail.com
