A concerned motorcyclist is urging fellow bikers to join a new group aimed at helping reduce the number of fatalities on Wiltshire roads.
According to Wiltshire Police's statistics, 20 motorcyclists have been killed on Wiltshire’s roads over the last three years, with 166 suffering serious injury. A further 288 were injured in more minor collisions.
Mark Kimpton, 51, of Plants Green, Warminster, wants to set up the help group to give fully-licensed motorcyclists the chance to share their riding experiences and pass on tips and advice.
Mr Kimpton said: “In Wiltshire we have had a number of motorcycle casualties, and even some fatalities, which is very sad so I thought I would do something a bit different to get riders thinking about their techniques.
“I would like to run the group every couple of weeks and see how it develops.”
A breakdown of the police statistics shows that the number of motorcyclists seriously injured on Wiltshire’s roads last year rose by almost 30 to 72 incidents, in comparison to 45 the year before.
Despite that, the number of fatalities and minor injuries has dropped slightly since 2006.
Mr Kimpton said: “What we want to do ultimately is save lives because it is not about politics and all that, it is about riders helping each other out and to stay the sunny side up.
“With every single fatal accident, there is a family or partner who is absolutely devastated.
“Bikes can be a lethal missile if the rider doesn’t know how to handle them properly.”
The meetings, which will be free to attend, are expected to start later this month depending on demand. A venue has yet to be decided.
Mr Kimpton said: “Motorcycling is a brilliant way of getting from A to B. Chat to any group of bikers and you will hear words like ‘fun’, ‘freedom’ and ‘adventure’.
“You will also hear other comments like ‘other road users pull out in front of me’ and ‘drivers just don’t seem to see me’.”
