A charity in Westbury helping children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is still looking for a new base to store its donations after sending its final package from its present site on Friday.

Chernobyl Children in Need has two 20ft containers at Comet’s distribution centre in Quartermaster Road, on the West Wilts Trading Estate, but earlier in the year Comet announced the centre may close in August.

The charity sends two humanitarian loads to Belarus each year. Last year £83,000 worth of clothes, blankets and toys was delivered to schools, hospitals and orphanages.

On Friday the charity sent its final package worth about £40,000 from Comet’s distribution centre, which will take 14 days to reach Ozarichi, Belarus, via Hull and Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Charity chairman Adrian Walker said: “It all got away on time. It took about an hour and a half for us to load.

“I want to go and look round the West Wilts Trading Estate in the next few days to see if I can get any help from the companies there.

“If not I have had several offers from firms that are a bit further away, which could still work, so it’s quite promising.”

The charity is currently renovating a kitchen in a school in Hamichi as well as building two sets of toilet blocks in another school in Bobrovichi.

The latter school has 300 children with a budget of 25p per child per school day.
