An environmental pressure group have sent a giant postcard to the Government to demonstrate their opposition to the multi-million pound Westbury bypass.

The White Horse Alliance, a coalition of 12 groups including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Woodland Trust and three parish councils, presented the postcard to Secretary of State for Communities Hazel Blears on April 16.

Cate Le Grice Mack, chairman of the White Horse Alliance, is worried the eastern route proposed for the road will ruin the town’s landscape, including the famous White Horse. She said: “One of Wiltshire's best-loved landscapes would be wrecked at a cost of £40m – £8m of it paid by local taxpayers – and the real transport needs of the area would not be met.”

A public inquiry into the bypass, which is estimated to cost around £35 million and is due to run from a new roundabout near Westbury cement works and rejoin the A350 at Madbrook Farm, was held at The Laverton last year.

A decision is expected to be made by the Government this summer.
