Wiltshire musicians have been picked to perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend Fringe Festival next month.
The Big Weekend will be held at Lydiard Park in Swindon on May 9 and 10, and will feature Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal and Kasabian and The Prodigy, who were announced this week.
The fringe festival will take place at venues across Swindon between May 4 and7, after 16 acts were handpicked by BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stevens.
They include The Volt, who are Phoebe Phillips, 20, and Jack Kendrew, 17, from Bradford on Avon, Sam Brookes, 22, from Trowbridge and Domenico Bartolo, 20, from Shoscombe in Somerset. The band had a 2008 to remember, winning MTV’s talent-seeking programme Get Seen Get Heard, bagging a nomination for best unsigned act at the Vodafone Music Awards, and appearing at Glastonbury.
Guitarist Jack said: “Everyone listens to Radio One so I hope it will help us build our fanbase. We just want people to hear what we do. I think the west country has a very underrated music scene so it will be nice to showcase that.”
The Volt, whose debut double A-side single Start Again and Punches is available on iTunes on May 4, will play The 12 Bar in Swindon that night.
Also playing is Decora, made up of Nick Weston (vocals and guitar) from Hilperton, Doug North (guitar) from Devizes, Sam Tarling, from Bratton (bass) and Dan Carroll, from Market Lavington (drums). They will play The Furnace on May 6.
Sam said: “I think it’s going to be our most important gig to date and I’ve heard that Huw Stevens will be there too.”
