Funeral director Aaron Bewley will be jetting off on a dream honeymoon next Saturday, but his destination is far from sandy beaches – he will be going to Mount Everest to raise money for prostate cancer.
Mr Bewley, who is 30 today, and his fiancee Amber Gilliani, 32 are getting married at Chelsea register office and will be celebrating with an unconventional 15-day trek to the base camp of Mount Everest.
He wants to help the Prostate Cancer Trust fund research after his father Jonathon got the all-clear following the shock discovery of his illness last year.
Aaron Bewley said: “It’s a shock to the system when something like this happens as we see families torn apart by this every day.
“We have raised £700 so far and have asked all of the wedding guests to give a donation instead of gifts, so we aim to raise thousands.
“It’s not the most romantic honeymoon but it is something we both want to do and is the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Jonathon Bewley, who runs the family firm, Merretts Funeral Directors, is proud of his son’s decision.
He said: “I had taken one of my children to the doctors when the doctor noticed I was limping.
“I thought I had just pulled a muscle but he checked it out and said it was more than that because it was painful. I had the operation shortly afterwards and have recently been given the all-clear but I have to go to check-ups every six months.
“I am so proud of Aaron and Amber, climbing Mount Everest is like them as they like that sort of thing but to ask for no wedding gifts and donations instead is something.”
The couple would like to thank their family and friends hospital and Box Surgery staff for their support.Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so through Merretts at 57a Pickwick Road, Corsham, SN13 9BS.
