After a six-day stakeout, a family of gypsies who illegally moved onto a plot of land in the middle of Bumpers Farm industrial estate in Chippenham have now left.
Fresh concerns that the travellers were planning on staying were raised when more caravans were seen pulling into the site on Vincents Road.A satellite dish was erected on one of the caravans.
But late on Tuesday night police officers issued the gypsies with a notice to leave the site after receiving the paperwork from the landowner, and on Wednesday the gypsies were seen leaving the small grassed area.
A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “We had received a number of calls from businesses in the area and complaints from members of the public.”
Sally Woodbury, chairman of the Romany Gypsy Advisory Group, said: “There is such a shortfall of gypsy sites in Chippenham that this pattern is going to continue.
“Many feel that they have no other option than to go about it in this way. The council really need to step up and sort out the provision for gypsies and travellers.”
