Sweet-toothed thieves nabbed cakes, fizzy pop, charity boxes and nearly £1,500 after a raid on two cafes in Bradford on Avon.
Police are appealing for information after the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust cafe and Granny Mo’s, both on the Canal Wharf, were broken into overnight between the 4.30pm on Tuesday, April 7 and 9am on Wednesday, April 8.
Barbara Froggatt, manager of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust cafe, arrived at work on the Wednesday to find the place had been trashed, with washing up liquid thrown around the room.
“We had been doing so well here and all of the profits that we make go to the trust to help preserve and protect the canal,” she said.
“They even stole a charity box on the counter for Dorothy House. Isn’t that horrible? It’s really dreadful.
“It’s not personal to me but I felt sad for a few days.
“They covered the place in slime, ripped off the shelves and switched off the fridges.”
The thieves also took a laptop and more than £1,000 in cash from the cafe’s safe.
Thieves also took a handful of small change, including cash from a tips jar, from Granny Mo's, while also picking up one chocolate bun and one lemon bun on their way out.
Mo Bennie, owner of Granny Mo’s, said although the amount stolen was not much, she still lost a morning’s taking while the police investigated the crime.
The doors to both properties had been levered open.
Sergeant Neil Berrett, of Bradford on Avon police, said: "Burglaries in Bradford are not a regular occurrence. We don't get many in the town so we are particularly keen to prevent this happening again.”
