Organisers of a youth club in Bowerhill near Melksham have vowed to keep the club going despite a temporary closure.

The club, which meets in the pavilion next to Bowerhill Sports Fields, faced uncertainty due to a lack of members and volunteers and has now closed until June 3 when it is due to be relaunched.

The club, for 11 to 15 year olds, had been set up after a spate of anti-social behaviour on the estate and has been running for about ten years.

Over the past few months membership dropped from around 15 to two members.

Melksham Without Parish Council chairman, Mike Mills said: “The last thing we want to do is let it close. We did have two more local volunteers come forward, but we still had a lack of members.

“I was talking to some of the regular members the other day who are a bit older now and they said they had outgrown it, but it is the younger ones aged between 11 and 12 that we want to attract.”

Young people on the estate will be surveyed over the coming weeks to see what they want from the youth club.

Meanwhile the Friday Night Project, which gives young people between 13 and 18 the chance to use sports facilities at the Christie Miller Sports Centre for just £3, has been a huge success.

He said: “At the end of February we had 25 young people come along and at the end of March it was 35. The next event will be the last Friday of May.”
