Campaigners fighting plans for a bypass in Westbury, Wiltshire, have been given a grant from a climate change charity to help its cause.

The White Horse Alliance was awarded £2,500 from Artists Project Earth.

The group claims the road, that would create a route between the south coast and M4, will destroy wildlife and cause excessive traffic noise.

The scheme was submitted by the county council after a 30-year campaign by residents to cut traffic in Westbury.

The proposed 3.3 milebypass will cost about £33 million.

A public inquiry into the scheme was held last summer and the outcome is expected later this year.

The White Horse Alliance said the money from Artist Project Earth would help to take their fight further if the result goes against them.

Secretary Patrick Kinnersly said: "This grant will help us raise awareness of the way building roads like the Westbury bypass can only increase traffic and carbon emissions and encourage more car-dependent sprawl across land we need for growing food, and through habitats vital to already endangered species."
