THE fiancee of a 23-year-old man killed in an horrific crash on the Warminster bypass had spoken to her partner on the phone just before his death.

Mother-of-one Kylie Ward, 18, of Petticoat Lane, in Dilton Marsh, Westbury, said she was talking to Ben Morton just before the crash at 3.45pm on Monday.

His Ford Scorpio collided with a JCB tractor which was carrying concrete slabs, on the A350 between Cley Hill and the Granada services roundabout.

Miss Ward paid tribute to keen village footballer Mr Morton, of Shepherds Mead, Dilton Marsh, who she described as caring and someone who would do anything for anyone.

She said he was like a dad to her nine-month-old son Dylan, who is from a previous relationship.

“Ben was a genuine person, sweet, and an all-round caring person,” she said.

“I loved him so much and he made such a good dad – he made me so happy.

“Ben loved Dylan. He saw him as his own and was so good with him.”

Miss Ward first met Mr Morton four years ago when she moved from Warminster but they got together following a chance meeting on Dilton Marsh Playing Fields about a year and a half ago. They started talking and in May began their relationship.

“We got engaged in August. I was babysitting when Ben came around to speak to me. He went down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” she said.

“I was overjoyed – I couldn’t believe it.

“We had talked about getting married but I didn’t know he was going to propose.”

She said they had made plans. “We wanted to wait to get married until next year because then Dylan could be the page boy,” she said.

“We talked about settling down and having kids.

Mr Morton, a fan of Liverpool Football Club, lived with his dad Graham and brother Andrew, 19, in Dilton Marsh but was also close to his mother Sarah, who lives in Durrington, near Salisbury.

Mr Morton was working at Lidl in Canal Road, Trowbridge but had aspirations to join the RAF and become a pilot.

In his spare time he played football for Dilton Rovers Football Club, where he was a committee member.

He played alongside his brother Andrew.

Miss Ward said also spent many hours on his XBox games console playing Guitar Hero – a Christmas present from her.

Miss Ward moved to Staverton in October but is now at her family home
