Speculation is mounting that the Coopers store in Westbury could shut for five months when it is taken over by supermarket giant Morrisons in May.

Morrisons, who bought the Edward Street store in February from David Cooper, would not comment on the rumour which surfaced on the town’s internet forum on Tuesday.

Westbury town councillor Charlie Finbow said: “For a new business it’s going to take some work to bring it up to date and Westbury will have to be patient while the work is completed but it will be great for the town in the long run.

“I don’t think anyone has heard anything official but I’ve been told by several members of staff at Coopers that while the shop is under refurbishment they will have to go to the Warminster store for training.”

Morrisons said in a statement: “If there is a requirement to temporarily close the store we can assure all colleagues that they will remain in Morrisons’ employment, receiving company training until the store is fully open.”
