A booming web design company in Trowbridge could be creating up to six new jobs if it gets the go-ahead to expand into a former mobile phone store.

Webcreation UK, which has its headquarters in Fore Street, Trowbridge, is eyeing up an expansion into the former Intek Communications store below, which closed last Thursday making one person redundant and transferring its remaining staff to stores in Warminster and Frome.

Webcreation UK’s director Leon Millard said it is now the UK’s biggest web design company after launching three years ago.

Mr Millard said: “We have 15 employees here and we are currently recruiting two more positions. If we take over the premises there is the possibility of six more jobs.

“Employing people in a new office can only be a good thing for a town which is obviously struggling right now."

Technical and operations manager Matt Riley said the firm’s success in a time of recession is down to the fact online business is taking off.

He said: “We are doubling turnover every 18 months and are always looking at ways to expand.

“Online seems to be taking over the High Street in the recession. We have been looking to take over new premises as we are bursting at the seams, so this seems like the perfect opportunity."

Intek Communications, in Fore Street, follows a string of stores to go bust in Trowbridge during the credit crunch and recession, including Woolworths and PriceLess Shoes.

Last week the Wiltshire Times reported that at least 26 stores were empty in the town centre area, with many fearing an end is still nowhere in sight.

Intek’s Trowbridge manager Ollie Brown, who was clearing the Fore Street shop out, said: “The company made the decision this morning (Thurs). I am lucky to have kept my job, I have been relocated to the Frome store.”

Manny Hussain, managing director at Intek, said: “The shop had struggled for profit with the high street being fairly static.

“The lease was due to expire so we thought it was an opportune moment to close.

“As a company we have 24 stores that are all profitable. Our business is continuing to grow on the internet, proving the company has a bright future."

There was one redundancy at the store with the rest of the staff being relocated to stores in Frome and Warminster.

Mr Hussain said no other Intek stores would be affected.
