Chippenham Town manager Adie Mings has launched a stinging attack on his side after their failure to beat bottom side Mangotsfield United on Saturday and says they no longer deserve promotion.
The Bluebirds looked lacklustre throughout and fell behind at the end of the first half when winger Kyle Tooze caught the defence flat-footed and reacted quickly to an in-swinging cross.
Mings' side did level late on through on-loan Marcus Palmer but were unable to nick all three points with a last-gasp winner, although the boss said they barely deserved a draw and has promised an overhaul of the squad during the summer including the possible departure of several established first team players.
“It was shambolic with a lack of effort from some players who probably think they are better than they are,” he said.
“A late winner would have only glossed over everything that happened in the game. We never started the game brightly, never took the game to them, our final ball was poor, our passing was poor, but the thing that hurts me the most is the effort and work rate.
“I thought Luke Gullick was excellent again, young James Martin was fantastic in there and Marcus worked his socks off and got his goal but apart from that I really can't take much out of it because the lads have just got to look at themselves.
“If they feel that's acceptable then it's given me food for thought but the last few weeks have given me food for thought about what I need and what we need for next season.
“You could see in their body language when they took the field they thought it was just going to be another easy afternoon because they went to Yate and won, but, if you don't apply yourselves and your attitude is not spot on it doesn't matter who you are playing.
“It's good really because I know really what I'm dealing with because I need to make some changes now in the summer, drastic changes, I think certain players believe they are bullet-proof and untouchable but I think you'll see some changes in the summer. I think we need fresh personnel, fresh faces and I think we need some hungry players again now.”
Chippenham still have a mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs but with fifth-placed Cambridge five points ahead of them with a game in hand it seems almost certain they will remain in the Southern Premier League.
Mings says there will not be many changes before the end of the season but he has seen enough to know which areas need the most improvement, with a particular focus on the mental side to the game.
We still want to finish the season as strongly as we can,” he said.
“Players have got a chance to put things right but I've seen enough now over the 38 games we've played now. It's been too up and down and a lot of our performances.
“So we need to work now and try to find ourselves more consistent players, more hungry players and probably get a good blend of experience with the mixture of youth we've got in the side.
“If you cannot beat your Mangotsfields, Clevedons, Bashleys and sides that are down the bottom then it's no good because it shows a lack of mental strength in players who can only get themselves up to play the top sides.
“When it comes to the others they think they can just turn and put in an inept performance. That's the level of inconsistency which has troubled us all season and that's the painful thing because for all the ability some of these players have got their attitude has been poor in certain aspects of the season.”
