I would like to say thank you to the members and volunteers who joined me on Sunday morning to start clearing the Biss Meadows Country Park of litter.

In a two hour period we manage to collect approximately 40 sacks of rubbish from the park, from both sides of the river.

There is still a lot more to do in the area and there is also a lot of rubbish that has been dumped in the river and the pond yet to be cleared.

However, during the course of the year we hope to continue to tidy the area and turn it back into an open space that can be enjoyed by all the residents of Trowbridge while protecting and improving the habitats of a wide range of flora and fauna that exist on the meadows.

Everyone can help to improve the area by using the rubbish bins provided or taking their litter home and preventing fly tipping in the area.

So far we have found old bikes, tyres, VDU screens etc in the river and pond along with numerous empty bottles and drinks cans.

The meadows are the start of a green avenue leading through the centre of Trowbridge which we believe should be treated as a valuable asset to the town with the opportunity to encourage wildlife such as water voles, kingfishers and butterflies along the entire length of the river.

Who knows, maybe we could even see the return of otters on the river at some future date.

Anyone interested in the work of the group can contact us through our new website www.bissmeadows.org.uk Roy Jones, Chairman, Friends of Biss Meadows Country Park
