READER Vivien Green has been able to supply some details about one of the pictures we published on March 13, showing football teams.
Mrs Green and her mother have identified her late father, Cyril Sadd, as the third player from the left on the back row of the picture above. She said: “It is definitely the Spencer Moulton team, as he only ever played for them, and it was taken on the Trowbridge Road ground in Bradford on Avon, as my mother recognises the changing rooms.
“The other picture is also definitely taken on that ground too, but Dad is not in that one, so it might be one of the other teams mentioned in the article.”
Mrs Sadd wonders if the pictures were in fact taken earlier than was at first thought, as she feels they were taken before her late husband, who at the time lived on Tory, Bradford on Avon, was called up at the start of the Second World War. Possibly they were taken in the early summer of 1939, at the end of the 1938/39 season.
Mr Sadd, who worked for Spencer Moulton in Bradford, was away from home until 1945 during his war service, and then returned to Bradford, where he and his wife lived on Middle Rank, later moving up the hill to Priory Close.
The photos were originally brought in by Times reader Mike Smith, who found them while clearing the effects from his late father Reginald John Smith’s home.
They both feature his father, keen footballer Jack Smith, pictured front centre on both photos. His son was unsure which teams were pictured, or when and where they were taken.
Mr Smith could only identify one other player, Bill Keates, the first player on the left of the front row on the picture on the right. Mrs Sadd recognises several faces on the other photo, but unfortunately cannot now recall any of their names. Can any other readers help further?
