FORMER Land Girl June Barrett who was delighted when her war efforts finally received recognition has died, aged 82.
The daughter of George and Lucy Cantello, of Upper Westwood, she was born on Derby Day 1926 and always claimed that she narrowly escaped being named Coronac after the winner.
Mrs Barrett was educated in Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge and as a country and animal lover answered the call to join Women’s Land Army when the Second World War broke out.
While working on a farm she met her future husband Clarence (Larry) Barrett and they were married in 1947, spending most of their married life in Ramsbury.
Mrs Barrett always felt strongly that the service given by the Land Army never received true recognition and was deeply honoured to finally receive her medal of service a year before her death.
