A planning application for a £25m Asda store for Melksham has overcome its final hurdle after the secretary of state’s office decided not to call it in.
West Wiltshire District Council approved plans for the 28,500sq ft store in January, but because of the size and location of the store it was referred to the office of Hazel Blears, secretary of state for communities and local government.
The store, which will create 300 jobs, will be built on land currently occupied by Countrywide Farmers, off the A350 West of England roundabout.
Countrywide will move to the site of its former grain mill.
A spokesman for West Wiltshire District Council said: “Government officials have decided that this application is not of a sufficiently large scope to have an impact beyond the local level and will therefore not be calling it in.”
