Punk rock legend Hugh Cornwell remained true to his word as his current tour stopped off at Bath’s Komedia club last night.
The former Stranglers frontman and Wiltshire resident made public his views of Trowbridge after penning a song about the town on his latest and critically acclaimed album Hoover Dam.
Please Don’t Put Me On A Slow Boat to Trowbridge gained local and national media attention and roused the hackles of civic leaders in Wiltshire’s County Town.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast last month, Cornwell, who lives between Box and Corsham, said: “It’s a tip, it’s totally uninspiring. The one-way system is so confusing.
“Everyone I have ever spoken to who comes from Trowbridge or has lived there is always totally disparaging about it.”
The 59-year-old, however, offered an olive branch to residents of the town by offering free entry to anyone bringing with them proof of residency.
And before launching into Slow Boat to Trowbridge last night, Cornwell asked if anyone from Trowbridge was in - and found that two members of the audience had taken up the offer by flourishing a utility bill.
