We arrived at the White Hart in Burbage just after 7pm and we were struck by its cosy feel as soon as we walked inside.
The traditional pub has been run by Richard and Pauline Flint for the past 25 years. There is a separate dining room but we were content to sit in the bar area.
The menu is written on chalk boards above the bar and we were impressed by the number and range of dishes, although disappointed there were no starters.
I chose lamb shanks (£10.95) with rosemary gravy and potatoes. The meat fell off the bone as a perfectly cooked lamb shank should, the gravy was thick and tasty and the potatoes were cooked perfectly.
Keith chose a fish medley of breaded cod, plaice, haddock and salmon (£10.95) with chips. The fish was beautifully moist and both our vegetables tasted fresh and well cooked without being bland.
For dessert he had treacle sponge, which was deliciously sticky, while I was perfectly content with my apple pie with squirty cream.
The bill, including a glass of wine and large Coca Cola, was £36.70.
