PREMIER DIVISON: The race to become this season’s Robson Taylor, Chippenham League Premier division champions looks like being one of the best and closest for many seasons and with two months of the campaign remaining there is still plenty of football to play before the winners are finally crowned.
Potterne who reached the summit for the first time in their history last weekend will have to be at their very best if they are going to remain their for a second successive week, Pete Huntley and Lee Sanders side travel to Yatton Road where they will be greeted by previous leaders Biddestone Social who will be out to avenge their 3-1 loss from the start of March.
Both teams will be well aware that Sunday’s result could make or break their season so the match is certain to be enthusiastically contested and with Biddestone not having played for the last two weekends Potterne may have a slight advantage going into the game.
Biddestone will hope to be at full strength for the all-important game and it they are then they might just sneak a low scoring win.
Dog & Fox Ashley v Miller Sports
Russell Whatley’s Bradford based Dog & Fox Ashley side share the number one spot with Potterne, but their inferior goal difference sees them in second place, but should Potterne fail to beat Biddestone a victory for the Dog over basement side Miller Sports will see them take over at the top of the table.
The Dog defeated Miller 7-0 on the opening day of the season and although the hosts might not be at full strength for the return clash they should have few problems in wrapping up a league double over Tim Knight’s side who are just two defeats away from relegation to division one.
Steve Roddy who scored a brace for the Dog in the earlier match should have few problems in adding to his 20 goals and if he is on form he might just open up a gap on his rivals for the top flight’s golden boot.
FC Colerne v Maud Heath Sports
FC Colerne are staring relegation in the face unless they can conjure up something a little special in their five remaining matches beginning with a home clash with Maud Heath Sports who beat them 1-0 in the reverse thanks to a Darren Holcombe goal.
The result of the encounter at Colerne’s Bath Road ground could be just as close as the first meeting of the sides and with Maud Heath having suffered defeat in their last two games, Colerne might just fancy their chances of picking up what would be only their third win from what has been a very long season.
If the hosts were to take all the points it would be the first time since December 2007 that they would have won on home soil which is hard to believe as their home venue was once a fortress and they were hard to beat, but things have changed but on this occasion Colerne are tipped for victory.
The Ship FC v Westbury Rangers A
Having been written off by the so called experts in recent weeks, Trowbridge based Ship FC have defied the odds by gaining a well deserved draw with Westbury Rangers A which they followed up with a 3-2 victory over Maud Heath Sports last weekend.
Lee Hayward’s side are due to entertain Westbury Rangers for the second time in 11 days and if they can show the same commitment that earned them a 2-2 draw in the previous game then they could actually extended their unbeaten run to three games.
With most of the Ship side being under 20 there is no doubt they will give Shaun Gardiner’s side the run-around but the question is can they take their chances, Bradley King-Taylor who scored a hat trick last weekend will hope for more support from the likes of Jake Hiscocks and Jamie Jordan and if he gets it then the Ship have a realistic chance of claiming back to back victories.
Winsley v Semington Rovers
Winsley and Semington Rovers meet at Browns Park, Freshford this weekend with both teams looking to bounce back after defeats against respective opponents Corsham Centre A and Dog & Fox Ashley last weekend.
When the teams met a little over a month ago it was Winsley who surprisingly took the spoils as they ended Semington’s five match winning run thanks to a 2-1 success that saw Phil Little and Neil Hannaford score.
Semington will be looking to Stuart Barber, Kelvin Lockwood, Rich Allum and Andy Harrison for their inspiration in front of goal while Winsley will probably have to rely on top scorer Mike Little and Dean Ranger to fire them to glory.
The outcome should be another close one but on this occasion the points could even be shared but if there is to be an outright winner then the home team may just snatch a narrow win.
