More than 350 people turned out to a Warminster village on Saturday to buy weird and wonderful varieties of vegetables not available in the shops.
The first ever Codford potato day, organised by the Codford and District Gardening Club along with Pennard Plants of Somerset, who supplied more than 80 different varieties of potatoes including a red potato and a red, white and blue potato, which is no longer available to buy in supermarkets.
Organiser Karen Johnson, secretary of the village gardening club, was thrilled with the huge turnout and success of the event.
She said: “It was absolutely brilliant. We were all worried about how the event would turn out but people came from all over west Wiltshire to see the wide variety of heritage fruit and vegetables that were grown years and years ago but are no longer available in the shops.”
Different kinds of onions, garlic and shallots were also available to buy, along with heritage seeds and fruit trees.
Mrs Johnson said: “ There were so many different varieties to choose from with weird names like a red bean called the nun’s belly button.
“So many people came up to us asking if it is going to be held next year and I just couldn’t answer them at the time but I had a chat with Pennard Plants and they are happy to come back next year.”
The gardening club raised more than £250 from the event as they took ten per cent of the sales total made by Pennard Plants and they plan to use this money to pay for guest speakers at club meetings over the next year.
