COMIC Relief is in full swing across Wiltshire with schools, businesses and even ghosthunters getting involved in the red nose fun.

We are calling for our readers to email us their Comic Relief photos so we can use them in our dedicated photo gallery online and a selection will be used in next week's Wiltshire Times. Please email photos to wtimes@newswilts.co.uk and include your names and details of what you are up to.

Here is a round-up of what is going on across the county today.

TROWBRIDGE

A local ghostbuster will be taking a group of employees from Virgin Mobile in Trowbridge and Wiltshire County Council on a ghost hunt to raise money from Comic Relief.

Nick Thurston, who lives in Frome and works for Virgin Mobile's head office in Trowbridge, will be taking a group of 81 people to the secluded Woodchester Mansion in Nympsfield, Gloucestershire from tonight for The Big Red Ghost Hunt – 2 nights and 20 Ghosts.

Some members of the group have been sponsored to stay in haunted rooms for up to 45 minutes by themselves.

The 35-year-old, who has been a ghosthunter for six years, raised £1,500 for Comic Relief in 2007 when he took a group of eight people to the 11th century Chambercombe Manor in Ilfracombe, Devon, but is aiming for more cash this year.

Mr Thurston, who will be joined by Bodmin Jail’s resident medium Mark Rablin, said: “I’m pretty much a one man band ghosthunter. I’ve done a number of events before, but not on this scale.

“There is a lot of activity in the mansion’s cellar, where there is said to be an entity called Simon.

“I think there’s going to be one or two people that may have to retire back to the safe room. I think the trip is going to send some shivers up quite a few spines.”

Virgin Mobile will also be acting as a donation centre tonight, with more than 150 employees volunteering between 7pm and midnight.

Staff will also be dressing up in school uniform and running a tuck shop during the day.

BRADFORD ON AVON

Staff at Sainsbury’s in Bradford on Avon will get the chance to compete in their very own Supermarket Sweep for Red Nose Day today.

Sainsbury’s in Elm Cross Shopping Centre is hosting a variety of fundraising activities including a trolley dash.

Richard Clarke, team leader in the produce department, said: “Teams will have a list of products and they have to get as many of those products in their trolley as they can in the fastest time.

“We have to fall in line with health and safety so it’s not going to be quite like Supermarket Sweep – we’re not planning to run anyone over or anything.”

Two other members of staff have volunteered to lose their hair for charity. Jon Sullivan, team leader in the bakery, will be having his head shaved and Andrew Yates, who works in the coffee shop, will be having his legs waxed.

Hayley Stevens from the commercial department, is taking part in her own bush tucker trial, based on the popular TV show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The team leader will be tucking into a selection of bugs and insects.

Depending on the weather, checkout worker Tom Rockliff will be busking outside with his guitar.

Christchurch Primary School in Berryfield Road, Bradford, will also be raising money by combining Red Nose Day with World Book Day, which was on March 5.

Children will be asked to bring in their favourite book and come to school dressed as one of the characters from their chosen publication.

MELKSHAM

Staff at George Ward will be shaking their tail feathers during a special dance performance in aid of Comic Relief.

Teachers and teaching assistants from departments including drama, art, geography, English and history will be performing a Blues Brothers-inspired dance routine to Jake Blues and Ray Charles’ song Shake a Tail Feather.

The idea was the brainchild of deputy headteacher Margaret Bryant, who will also be participating in the routine, and came up with the idea after being inspired by the BBC’s programme Let’s Dance for Comic Relief.

The choreographers of the piece are Charlie West, who teaches drama, English and art and Tamsin Randall, who teaches dance, drama and physical education.

Miss Randall said: “The children are setting up various stalls in the school for Red Nose Day, as well as doing throw the flan at the teacher, so we thought we should do something to get involved.

“I think the children will be happy to pay to see us make fools of ourselves. I know they are going to take the mick out of us but it’s for a good cause.”

Miss West added: “I’ve heard that some pupils want to record the dance – I really hope that doesn’t happen.

“Teachers did some singing and dancing when we did the Melksham’s Got Talent show, so they’re used to being laughed at.”

Pupils will be asked to pay a donation in order to see the teachers perform.

WESTBURY

Eight friends from Westbury have decided to lose their clothes, don a red nose and cycle to Bath for Comic Relief.

The idea came from Matravers School student Dave Turley, 18, who is in his final year at the school studying biology, geography and history.

The 18-year-old will be joined by joined by fellow Year 13 student Sam Pictor, 18, as well as Year 12 students Daniel Shepherd, 17, Daniel Greenslade, 17, Daniel Davis, 17, Gary Watson, 17, Matthew Brook, 17, and former Matravers School pupil and now Bath University student Mark Brothers, 17.

Mr Turley, who got the idea while seeing a cyclist on train on his way back from visiting his girlfriend in Bath, said: “We’re hoping that people will be sponsoring us along the route and we’re hoping to come back on the train in our underwear as well. We’re going to take backpacks with water and some clothes in, so if they don’t let us through the ticket barriers in just our pants we’ll have to change.”

The group of lads, who have already raised £350 prior to the cycle, will be setting off on their 20-mile trip at 2.30pm from Mr Turley’s home in Bratton Road and hope to arrive at Bath Abbey at around 6pm. Mr Turley added: “Some people don’t think we’re going to make it and they want video and photo proof. Others think it’s just going to be really amusing.”

The lads will be cycling through Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon during the fundraiser.
