A Warminster mum has launched a petition calling for a crossing outside her child’s primary school as she fears its only a matter of time before someone is knocked over.
Elle Pope, 34, of Giles Hollow, hopes parent power will see a zebra crossing installed outside Sambourne School, in Sambourne Road.
Mrs Pope, who has a five-year-old son, Ben, at the school and a four-year-old, Tom, due to start in September, said: “People are parking up the road a lot more, what with all the work going on in the town, and the traffic is being redirected along the road so you just can’t see when you are crossing. It is dangerous.
“We are worried that if nothing happens someone will get hit and we don’t want that to happen.”
The petition was launched this week and it is hoped it will generate enough interest so that the town council considers the idea.
Mrs Pope added: “The children are only little and people in their cars don’t see them and with all the cars parked there as well it is a nightmare.
“There is a lollipop lady but she is not there all of the time.
“If lots of people get together it will make the council take notice. I spoke to Cllr Paul Batchelor about it and he said it would be good to speak to other parents to see if they would like to get involved.”
It is hoped the crossing will be20 yards from the school gates.
Cllr Batchelor, a town and county councillor, said: “It is something that should have happened ages ago. There are a lot of children coming from Sambourne School but the crossing is not just for the school, it would be there for everybody.
“I think it is something the town council would have to fund. I would like to see that it is match funded, perhaps by the county council. I would like to think we could do it by this time next year, if there is enough support.”
Sambourne School headteacher Angela Reeves said: “We are always concerned about that main road, it’s very busy and since they put a diversion through the town it’s creating an extra amount of traffic.
“We do have an ongoing issue with parents dropping off their children at the front of the school but of course it’s not enforceable.”
To sign the petition call the school on 01985 212458.
