PREMIER DIVISON: The top game in the Premier division of the Robson Taylor, Chippenham League this weekend has to the one at the Recreation ground in Box where Stuart Beeho’s hosts are set to lock horns with leaders Biddestone Social who were unable to raise a side for their clash with Westbury Rangers A last weekend.
Box Rovers could be in a similar position to Biddestone themselves this Sunday as a number of their players are due to be away with Corsham Town on the Saturday and might not be available for Rovers on the Sunday.
Biddestone have a slender one point lead at the top but despite beating Rovers 3-2 on the opening day of the season thanks to goals from Kris Beasley and the joint management team of Danny Jones and Dan Lardner the return match will be a lot harder especially as Rovers go into the game on the back of a fine 5-2 victory over Potterne.
Holt v Westbury Rangers A
With Westbury Rangers A still trying to play catch up, they will only be too pleased that their fixture this weekend is away at Holt and should go ahead no matter what the weather brings.
Rangers have managed just nine league matches to date while their hosts have played 18 of their 24 fixtures but unbelievably this will be the first time the teams will meet this season.
Rangers who are unbeaten in their previous seven matches should get the better of Stuart Faint’s side who have picked up two wins in their last nine outings.
Honours were shared last term as each team claimed a win apiece from their two meetings, but on this occasions Rangers are tipped to claim what should be a convincing win.
Maud Heath Sports v The Ship FC
Calne based Maud Heath Sports will look forward to the visit of Trowbridge based The Ship FC this weekend and Andy Townsend’s side will be confident that they can claim their third win in five outings to heap more misery on their guests at the Recreation ground who are bidding to avoid an eighth defeat of the season.
This will be the first meeting in the league for the clubs, but Maud Heath defeated the Ship 2-1 in the knockout cup earlier this year thanks to a Darren Holcombe double and the striker will be convinced that he will be able to fire his team to another win that if other results go for them could move them a couple of places up the table.
The result is likely to be another close one but just like the cup result Maud Heath are tipped to take the points.
Potterne v FC Colerne
Having suffered a 5-2 defeat last weekend against Box Rovers that saw them miss out on the chance to takeover in pole position, Potterne will be hoping that they won’t make the same mistake this Sunday when they host relegation threatened FC Colerne at the Northbrook.
Should the match between Box and Biddestone fail to produce a winner then Potterne ought to become the new leaders of the top flight come Sunday afternoon as they should claim a comfortable win over a Colerne side whose days in the top flight look to be numbered.
The Bath Road club have taken just five points from a possible 36 and with games against Potterne (two), Corsham Centre (two) and Westbury Rangers A still to come their chances of beating the drop look bleak, but there is no doubt they will give 100% in effort to stay where they are but sadly for Colerne they shouldn’t really stand a chance against their hosts as they look to avoid a 16th loss of the season.
Semington Rovers v Dog & Fox Ashley
Semington Rovers play hosts to Dog & Fox Ashley at St Mary’s, Steeple Ashton this weekend and the fixture is a massive one for Russell Whatley’s Dog & Fox side.
With the way things are starting to evolve in the race for silverware, the Dog may well had thought that having dropped eight points to date that they would be out of the title race but that shouldn’t be the case as other fancied teams are now starting to slip up and if the Dog can beat Semington for a second time this season they will remain in the hunt for a top two finish.
When the sides met in September the Dog won 6-4 thanks to a hat trick from Steve Roddy, a Nick Ross double and Steve Wickings single, Stuart Barber scored a four timer for Semington and would like to think that if he did the same this weekend the result would be different.
Both teams are on a good run at the moment and the result is a hard one to call and could see the points shared, but if there is to be an outright victor then the Dog may just be slight favourites to pick up two very important points.
Winsley v Corsham Centre A
Winsley go into their match at Brown’s Park, Freshford against old adversaries Corsham Centre A as the side clubs are struggling to beat at the moment. Winsley who couldn’t buy a win in the early part of the season have lost just once in their six matches in 2009 and if manager Paul Ranger can lift his troops for their battle with the Centre then they will have a very good chance of beating their fierce rivals for the first time ever.
The normally well oiled Corsham Centre machine has been stuttering along the rails of late but they are slowly starting to show that they are nearing the form that brought them three successive top flight titles but they know that if they are to claim a fourth one on the spin they are going to have to overcome a Winsley side who could well prove to be a banana skin to their title hopes.
The Centre won the earlier meeting 7-2 but a new look and determined Winsley side will make them fight a lot harder for the win this time and although they should get it the score line should be a close one.
