More than 200 people turned up to watch the ‘whirlwind’ Jimmy White at a snooker charity event in Westbury on Friday night.
The former world number two played 11 local players to raise money for the Paul Hunter Foundation, which is named after the former snooker player who died of cancer in 2006, and aims to get children off the streets and playing snooker.
The event, which took place at the former Blue Circle Sports Club - now Westbury Country Park - was organised by Trowbridge snooker star Stephen Lee, who qualified for the World Championship in April, this week.
Mr Lee, who now practices at the country club, said: “It was a great evening and we’re looking at bringing in more big names to the club on a regular basis.
“We want to make it the place to come for any sporting event in the region.”
Ashley Brewer, who is the son of the venue’s owner, Steve Brewer, was the first player to take on Jimmy White.
The 18-year-old said: “I only had a few shots. I potted my first red then missed the next shot and he came to the table and made a break of 80. He gave me a free shot at the end of the frame.
“He was a nice bloke to talk to and a great laugh at the table.”
Steve Brewer, 50, who runs the bar with his family, said: “It was a fantastic evening and was great to have Jimmy at the club. He’s just a really normal bloke - one of the lads.
“We’re going to start putting on these type of events on throughout the year. We currently in talks with other snooker players and darts players.”
Westbury Country Park’s next event will be with former snooker player, and now international 10-ball pool champion, Tony Drago.
The Maltese will be taking on 20 local pool players as well as conducting a sports memorabilia auction for charity.
Entry is £5 on the door at 7pm.
