For 10 weeks at a Trowbridge primary school, parents and carers have been finding out how their children learn maths now compared to how they did during their time at school.
The course is part of a Family Learning initiative and Holbrook Primary School’s parents are the first to take a test equivalent to a maths GCSE at the end of the course.
Mum, Sam Greenland, said: “It goes to show that you’re never too old to learn. The course has been absolutely brilliant. I think it’s nice for my daughter to see that her mum is willing to go to school to learn. Every child with a parent on this course has gained something.”
The parents spend some of the lesson working through maths techniques practised in schools and the rest working on maths activities with their children. Treasure hunts, creating board games and going to the shops have been part of the course.
Course tutor Caroline Stephens said: “I meet many parents who feel they did not get on well with maths at school and it is very special to see them learning together with their child and overcoming those fears.”
