Teammates at Bradford on Avon Cricket Club have paid tribute to Adrian Cooksey, who died after an attack in Melksham on Saturday night.
Mr Cooksey, 50, died this morning after being found with severe head injuries.
He was described as a wonderful friend who would be sadly missed by the club.
Treasurer James Pike, 28, said: "He was an outstanding member of the community and a lovely bloke - a real father figure.
"You won't find anyone who could say a bad word about him. Obviously it's a great loss to his family, and to the cricket team.
''He was a wonderful member of the club and he worked very hard for the club - he was always helping out the younger players.
''He was captain of the third and the second team during his career with us, and he helped many a player on their way to Wiltshire Division One.
''It will be a great loss for all of us. He was irreplaceable.''
