Hundreds of people are expected to get on their bikes to take part in an open cycling event to be held in Warminster in June.
The Warminster Cycle Group has announced plans for a ‘Warminster Wobble’ event on Sunday, June 14, designed to promote cycling throughout the county and conincide with a national bike week.
The group received £750 in funding from the town council to hold the community event, which will include both short and long-distance bike rides, a cycle entertainer and advice on bike maintenance and repairs.
Event organiser Colin French, 60, of St John’s Road, Warminster, said: “It’s a fun ride on Sunday but we also found some people wanted to do a little bit more so there will be more challenging rides on the Saturday (June 13) led by proper mountain bikers, the Black Canon Collective.
“The ride on Sunday is no more then a leisurely ride around Warminster for as many people as we can get to take part.”
The town’s park will play host to a day of cycle-related events on the Sunday, including BMX displays by local riders, advice on cycle maintenance from the town’s bike shop, a bouncy castle, juggler, bike tests and the chance to participate in a traffic survey, designed to find out people’s views about local congestion and transport.
The event is designed to coincide with Bike Week, which runs from June 13 to June 21, and is the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event. Visit www.bikeweek.org.uk/ for details.
Mr French said: “During a community day here in Warminster last November we showcased our plans for the event and had a good response from local people.
“Many residents would love to use a cycle in the town but lack confidence.
“In an effort to remedy this, we have teamed up with Bikeability, who have offered to come along on the day and explain how they can help children and adults alike to gain the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.”
The Sunday event will begin with a two-mile cycle through the town leaving from the town park, along High Street and Boreham Road and back to the park, with refreshments provided by Country Farmers along the way.
