Police have arrested a 19-year-old local man on suspicion of murder after Trowbridge builder Adrian Cooksey died from injuries in hospital.
Mr Cooksey, 50, was found lying unconscious and seriously injured on a pavement in Spa Road, Melksham in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He was found by an off-duty policeman at 3am suffering from head injuries.
Police sealed off the area to gather forensic evidence. It is closed from the Market Place to Spa Court roundabout.
Mr Cooksey is believed to have been in the Parson's Nose pub in High Street, Melksham, during the evening.
He was a keen cricketer and played for Bradford's second team. He ran A&S Home Improvements in Trowbridge.
The 19-year-old suspect was arrested at 5.30am today and is in custody at Melksham police station awaiting interview.
Detective Inspector Matt Johnson, the senior investigating officer, is appealing for information on Mr Cooksey's movements on Saturday night.
A police spokesman said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have been a witness."
