Police are investigating after a man was found unconscious in Spa Road, Melksham, in the early hours of this morning.

An off-duty policeman found the middle-aged man, believed to be from the town, lying on a footpath. He had suffered head injuries and is now in a critical condition at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Police sealed off the area for several hours to gather forensic evidence. It was closed from the Market Place, Melksham to Spa Court roundabout.

A police spokesman said: "Anyone who may have seen the man before the attack, or knows what may have happened can call Inspector Matt Johnson on 0845 4087000."
